Theorem 41.7.3.label Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space, $T \in B(H)$ with $\norm{T}_{B(H)}\le 1$, and $\mathbb{T}= \partial B_{\complex}(0, 1)$, then the mapping

\[\phi: \complex[z, \ol z] \to B(H) \quad p \mapsto p(T)\]

extends into a completely positive map on $C(\mathbb{T}; \complex)$.

Proof, using trigonometric moment sequences, [Theorem 2.6, Po02]. Assume without loss of generality that $\norm{T}_{B(H)}< 1$. Using Proposition 41.7.2, it is sufficient to show that the Toeplitz matrix

\[A = \sum_{i, j = 1}^{n} E_{ij}\otimes A_{i - j}= \begin{bmatrix}I&T^{*}&\cdots&(T^{*})^{n-1}\\ T&\ddots&\ddots&\vdots \\ \vdots&\ddots&\ddots&T^{*} \\ T^{n-1}&\cdots&T&I\end{bmatrix}\]

is positive for all $n \in \natp$. To this end, let

\[R = \begin{bmatrix}0 &\cdots &\cdots &\cdots &0 \\ T & \ddots & & &\vdots \\ 0 & \ddots &\ddots & &\vdots \\ \vdots &\ddots &\ddots &\ddots &\vdots \\ 0 &\cdots &0 & T & 0\end{bmatrix} = \sum_{j = 1}^{n - 1}E_{(j+1)j}\otimes T\]

then for each $k \in \natz$, $R^{k} = \sum_{j = 1}^{n-k}E_{(j+k)j}\otimes T^{k}$. In particular, $R^{n+1}= 0$ and

\[A = I + \sum_{k = 1}^{n} R^{k} + \sum_{k = 1}^{n} (R^{*})^{k} = \sum_{k = 0}^{\infty} R^{k} + \sum_{k = 0}^{\infty} (R^{*})^{k} - I\]

As $\norm{R}_{M_n(B(H))}= \norm{T}_{B(H)}< 1$, by recognising the Neumann series and using the resolvent identity,

\begin{align*}A&= (I - R)^{-1}+ (I - R^{*})^{-1}- I \\&= (I - R)^{-1}(I - R^{*} + I - R - (I - R)(I - R)^{*})(I - R^{*})^{-1}\\&= (I - R)^{-1}(I - RR^{*})(I - R^{*})^{-1}\ge 0\end{align*}

Proof, using von Neumann’s inequality. Let $p = \sum_{j = 0}^{n} \lambda_{j} z^{j}, q = \sum_{j = 0}^{n} \mu_{j} z^{j} \in \complex[z]$ such that $p + \ol q \ge 0$, then

\begin{align*}p + \ol q = \text{Re}(p + \ol q)&= \frac{p + \ol p}{2}+ \frac{q + \ol q}{2}\\ \sum_{j = 0}^{n} (\lambda_{j}z^{j} + \ol{\mu_j}z^{-j})&= \frac{1}{2}\sum_{j = 0}^{n} (\lambda_{j} + \mu_{j})z^{j} + (\ol \lambda_{j} + \ol \mu_{j})z^{-j}\end{align*}

so $\lambda_{j} = (\lambda_{j} + \mu_{j})/2 = \mu_{j}$ for all $1 \le j \le n$. After rebalancing $\lambda_{0}$ and $\mu_{0}$, assume without loss of generality that $q = p$.

Let $c = \normn{p + \ol p}_{C(\mathbb{T}; \complex)}/2$, then $\normn{p + \ol p - c}_{C(\mathbb{T}; \complex)}= \norm{p + \ol p}_{C(\mathbb{T}; \complex)}/2$. By von Neumann’s inequality,

\[\normn{p(T) + p(T)^* - c}_{B(H)}\le \normn{p + \ol p - c}_{C(\mathbb{T}; \complex)}= \norm{p + \ol p}_{C(\mathbb{T}; \complex)}/2 = c\]

As $p(T) + p(T)^{*} - cI$ is self-adjoint,

\[0 \le p(T) + p(T)^{*} - c + \norm{p(T) + p(T)^* - cI}_{B(H)}\le p(T) + p(T)^{*}\]

$\square$
